Beyond the Autism Diagnosis: Applying Emerging Evidence on ADHD, Mental Health, and Functional Needs to Behavior-Analytic Practice

Share

About Course

Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, and co-occurring mental health conditions can create complex clinical presentations for behavior analysts. Effective ABA practice requires clinicians to look beyond diagnostic labels and consider behavioral function, environmental variables, communication abilities, emotional regulation, adaptive functioning, and individual support needs.

Drawing on the October 2026 independent review of mental health conditions, ADHD, and autism, together with established behavior-analytic research, this webinar examines how emerging evidence can inform functional behavior assessment, individualized intervention planning, and clinical decision-making.

Participants will explore how co-occurring ADHD, anxiety, and other mental health concerns may influence behavioral presentation, assessment findings, treatment response, and participation across settings. Particular attention is given to distinguishing diagnostic characteristics from behavioral function, developing competing functional hypotheses, and identifying contextual or environmental variables that may contribute to challenging behavior.

The training also reviews practical strategies for supporting communication, adaptive functioning, emotional and behavioral regulation, and meaningful participation across home, school, and community environments. Rather than relying only on reductions in challenging behavior, participants will consider how to select and measure socially significant outcomes that reflect meaningful improvement in daily functioning.

Ethical considerations are integrated throughout the course, including scope of competence, interdisciplinary collaboration, appropriate referral, and the responsible use of diagnostic and mental health information within behavior-analytic practice.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain how diagnostic information, functional assessment, and environmental context can be integrated into individualized behavior-analytic treatment planning.
  • Identify how co-occurring ADHD, anxiety, and other mental health concerns may influence behavioral presentation, assessment procedures, and intervention outcomes.
  • Apply functional assessment principles to develop and evaluate competing hypotheses regarding challenging behavior and relevant contextual variables.
  • Differentiate diagnostic characteristics from the functional variables maintaining behavior.
  • Select behavior-analytic interventions that address communication, adaptive functioning, environmental barriers, emotional and behavioral regulation, and meaningful participation.
  • Describe ethical responsibilities related to scope of competence, interdisciplinary collaboration, referral, and the use of diagnostic or mental health information in ABA practice.
  • Identify socially significant outcomes that extend beyond reduction of challenging behavior and reflect meaningful improvement in daily functioning and participation.
